The Turkish baths at No. 25 Northumberland Avenue, of which Holmes and Watson were fond. They opened in 1884 and closed in 1948; round the corner in Craven Passage, the blocked-up door of the women's baths keeps its horseshoe arches and tiles.

Both Holmes and I had a weakness for the Turkish Bath. It was over a smoke in the pleasant lassitude of the drying-room that I have found him less reticent and more human than anywhere else.
