A place in New York
Myrtle's apartment
Where the story puts it, as near as can be told.
1922Myrtle's apartmentThe top-floor flat Tom Buchanan keeps for Myrtle Wilson, "one slice in a long white cake of apartment-houses" on 158th Street. The novel names only the street, which in Manhattan runs through Washington Heights; the building is invented.
I was within and without, simultaneously enchanted and repelled by the inexhaustible variety of life.
Visiting today
158th Street runs through Washington Heights, a residential neighbourhood. A few blocks away the Morris–Jumel Mansion, Manhattan's oldest house, is a museum. Subway: 157 St on the 1 train.
