Nick has come East in the spring of 1922 and rented a weather-beaten bungalow for eighty dollars a month. Next door is a mansion, and on its lawn one night stands the man who owns it, alone, with his arms stretched out toward the dark water.

Involuntarily I glanced seaward—and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock.

You are a long way from this shore for the rest of the walk. Keep the light in mind; everything that happens in the city happens because of it.

02Queensboro Bridge

The city seen for the first time

Stand where the bridge lifts clear of Queens and Manhattan opens ahead of you. This is the view Nick Carraway has from the passenger seat of Gatsby's car, on the way to a lunch he does not yet understand.

The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and the beauty in the world.

It is the last moment in the novel when New York is only a promise.

Out of the glare of the street and down a flight of steps. Gatsby is waiting in the anteroom with a small, flat-nosed man who looks Nick over and begins to talk about a friend who was shot outside the old Metropole, a few blocks west of here.

When the man has gone, Nick asks who he is. A gambler, Gatsby says, and then, coolly:

He's the man who fixed the World's Series back in 1919.

The idea staggers Nick. It had never occurred to him that one man could play with the faith of fifty million people.
