The theatre Bram Stoker ran for the actor Henry Irving from 1878, and whose portico holds the pillars of The Sign of Four. The building behind was rebuilt in 1904; the portico is the 1834 original.

Down the Strand the lamps were but misty splotches of diffused light which threw a feeble circular glimmer upon the slimy pavement.
