A place in Purfleet
Carfax
It exists only in the story: this is the spot the story gives it.
1890sCarfaxThe old house at Purfleet the Count buys first, "no doubt a corruption of the old Quatre Face", next door to Dr Seward's asylum. Invented; pinned at Purfleet, down the Thames.
The estate is called Carfax, no doubt a corruption of the old Quatre Face, as the house is four-sided, agreeing with the cardinal points of the compass.
Visiting today
Carfax never stood. Purfleet is a small town on the Thames in Essex, about half an hour by train from Fenchurch Street; the riverside is a short walk from Purfleet station.
